Located 17 km from Thodupuzha in Idukki district of Kerala, Thommankuthu is famous for its seven-step waterfall. It is an ideal place for adventure tourism in Idukki. Major attractions at Thommankuthu are forest trekking and bathing in the waterfall.

One of the best known waterfalls in Kerala state, Thommankuthu waterfalls is a great place to have a picnic surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The area is one of the major eco-tourism centres run by Government of Kerala in cooperation with the Forest Department of Kerala.

Situated 20 km from Thodupuzha town in Idukki District, it is in the Kaliyar Forest Range. Relatively small, but this is one of the most serene and beautiful cascades of Kerala.

Named after a tribal leader Thommachen Kuruvinakunnel, who was washed away in this waterfall while crossing the river, these waterfalls drop about 1500 m into a stream in a lush green scenic setting. This splendid waterfall comes down in seven steps with a cascade and a pool at each step on the rugged, rocks of the Muvattupuzha river. And the difference between the first and the last fall is 500m. The roar of the falls can be heard even before reach it. This is also an ideal venue for adventure tourism because one have to undertake a trek that takes one to the top of the mountain, a nearly 12 kms climb. It is advisable to avoid trekking during monsoon season.

The waterfalls is quite impressive after rainfall or in the monsoon season. The water from the falls is considred as of medicinal value and the area is more photographic potential due to its beautiful surroundings. Tourists can also enjoy boating on the lake. Fishing and horse riding are other options available in this beautiful place. There are many caves surrounding the waterfalls.
